Painter and Printmaker

Ian Hopton began painting in 1965 whilst an architectural student and continued to paint during his subsequent career whenever time allowed.

In 1981 he took a year out to study full time at West Surrey College of Art and the City Literary Institute in London. It was during this time that he experimented with watercolour and egg-tempera. Egg-tempera is a natural emulsion that combines the luminosity of watercolour with the flexibility of oils. It was also at the 'City Lit.' that he studied life drawing with the visionary artist Cecil Collins, whose philosophy and teaching methods have strongly influenced his work.

In 1990 he abandoned architectural work and moved to the Languedoc in the South of France where he has since worked as a painter and printmaker in his own studio and etching workshop.

Since 1982 he has exhibited in various solo and mixed exhibitions in England, France, Germany and Denmark.
